The Narrows Are Very Narrow.

Forrest's Thoughts:

Yup. The title says it all. The Narrows are very narrow.

It is quite a difficult hike. Sometimes. It depends how you do it.

The Riverside Walk is technically part of The Narrows. It's an easy, paved, two-mile hike, round-trip. It's kinda 'eh' for me.

The real narrows...

This hike is just flat out different. It's a slot-canyon hike, through an active river.

Look to the right, rocks.

Look to the left, more rocks.

Look down, water and rocks.

Look up, mostly cliffs (that's rock, by the way).

We did it from the top down, a brutal 16 mile hike. To get to the top you have to endure  an hour and a half on a combination of dirt and paved road. No place for, say, a BMW M3.

I highly recommend renting shoes from Zion Adventure Company in Springdale, nearby. For a mere $23 you can find yourself with a pair of shoes, a walking stick, and neoprene socks, all much appreciated when you are stumbling through a frigid river.

They say Wall Street is the narrowest part of The Narrows. It's not. Hiking from the top down, you find sections less than 15 feet across.

Looking up, one sees, well, not much. The sides of the canyon go up quite high, and you can only see the sky a little. The narrow canyon walls block out most of the sky.

If you've never done any of The Narrows before, try the bottom-up hike. It's much easier.

You should note though, that the Park Service recommends that you do not go all the way to the very top from the bottom, but instead go 5 miles in. Here you will find big Big Springs. They recommend you to turn back at that point.

Of course, you can always get a guide to help you through the hike, but those are pricey, so we went solo.

It's more fun to adventure with friends anyway.
